VAT refund fraud alert

Chartered Accountants & Tax Advisers

Call +44 (0)330 024 3200 and discover how we can help you.

We have been made aware of cases where taxpayers’ bank account details have been amended by HMRC without their knowledge.

We are urging clients to be vigilant and check that their details on the HMRC portal are correct.

This particular fraud has affected VAT registered companies and has meant that VAT repayments have been diverted to a third party.

We understand this has occurred when HMRC has received a letter or VAT 484 purporting to be from the taxpayer requesting their details be changed. HMRC has simply changed the details and followed up with a letter to say their details have been updated.

We would urge anyone submitting VAT repayments to check that their bank details are correct on the HMRC portal and contact HMRC as soon as possible if anything is wrong on

Telephone 0300 200 3700 or Outside UK +44 2920 501 261.
