Over the past few months, we’ve been sharing updates about the new Companies House identity verification (IDV) rules.
These changes affect company directors and People with Significant Control, so they’re important to understand.
We also know this hasn’t been a top priority for everyone. For many businesses, it’s still sitting on the “to do” list, and even for those who’ve started the process, it hasn’t always been smooth. Some people have run into delays, technical glitches, or just aren’t quite sure what they need to do.
If that sounds like your situation, you’re definitely not the only one.
Common issues we’re seeing
Clients who have already attempted identity verification have told us they’ve encountered:
- Difficulties completing verification online with Companies House
- Uncertainty over who actually needs to be verified (particularly where there are multiple directors or shareholders)
- Problems finalising filings because ID verification hasn’t been completed
- Confusion where directors or shareholders are based overseas
Left unresolved, these issues can lead to rejected filings, delayed Confirmation Statements, appointments or difficulties making future changes at Companies House.
Why it’s important to resolve this now
Under the new rules, identity verification must be completed before individuals can:
- Be appointed as a director
- Be registered as a PSC
- Submit filings to Companies House
Until ID verification is completed correctly, Companies House may refuse or delay filings, even if all other information is correct. As always, legal responsibility remains with the directors.
How we can help
If you haven’t yet started ID verification, or if you’ve tried but haven’t been able to complete it successfully, our company secretarial team can support you.
We can:
- Clarify who needs to be verified and when
- Help resolve issues where verification has stalled or failed
- Complete identity verification on your behalf as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider
- Ensure your Companies House filings and records are aligned with the new requirements, avoiding unnecessary delays
For many clients, handling IDV as part of their wider company secretarial compliance, rather than as a standalone task, has proved far simpler and more reassuring.
