Is your business ready for CBAM?

The new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism will come into effect on 1 January 2027.

CBAM exists to ensure imported goods face a similar carbon cost to those produced domestically. Its aim is to prevent businesses from moving production to countries with less stringent environmental regulations to avoid carbon-related costs, a practice known as carbon leakage. By applying a carbon charge to certain imports, CBAM helps create a level playing field for businesses, encourages cleaner production worldwide, and supports efforts to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

CBAM will introduce a new carbon charge for goods entering the UK and EU in the following sectors:

Iron & steel

Aluminium

Cement

Fertilisers

Hydrogen

Electricity (EU only)

Your business could be affected if:

  • you import specified CBAM goods into the UK, where their total value reaches £50,000 (UK) or 50,000 tonnes (EU), over a rolling 12-month period
  • your international supply chain includes affected products
  • you manufacture or distribute goods containing these materials
